Join in the BBC Sports Personality Big Thank You!

Comedian and Join In patron Eddie Izzard led the nation’s biggest ever thank you to sport volunteers at this year’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year show.

Live from the pre-show red carpet, Eddie and some of the UK’s favourite sporting stars surprised remarkable volunteers with thank you phone calls from a golden phone box.

They also recorded this special film to spread their personal thank you messages to all the other incredible sport volunteers around the country.

Big Thank You goes global!

In the run up to BBC Sports Personality, Join In and BBC Get Inspired asked clubs and players and up and down the UK to share their Big Thank You to sport volunteers.

During the show itself, Eddie asked the TV audience and everyone at Glasgow’s SSE Hydro to add their thanks.

And the response was enormous! The #BigThankYou hashtag was the top trend on Twitter – first in the UK, then worldwide!

And as everyone was sharing their messages of gratitude to sport volunteers, Eddie presented the 2014 BBC Get Inspired Unsung Hero – swimming volunteer Jill Stidever – with her award.

Behind the scenes

Join In volunteer Lisa Blythman-Wood was one of 500 Clyde-siders invited to join the BBC Sports Personality audience. Read what it was like to sit among the stars on the fabulous night, plus see all the photos from the red carpet on our Facebook page.

It’s always a good time for a #BigThankYou, so share your message with us on Twitter or on Facebook and show sport volunteers how much you appreciate them.
