Welcome to the Join In blog

#BigThankYou toolkit for clubs and groups

If you’re a member of a community sport, recreation or physical activity group that relies on volunteers, then here’s your chance to be part of the UK’s biggest thank you to the people who make them tick

On the weekend of 17-18 December 2016, we’re asking you to be part of #BigThankYou. There are no limits to how you can get involved, but here are some suggestions to get you started:

Create a #BigThankYou moment

We know clubs and groups are busy and many are already run by tireless volunteers. So a simple way to help retain your volunteers is a Big Thank You moment in an existing session.

Join In The Big Thank You 2016

Sports volunteers in the spotlight at BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2016!

We are thrilled to announce the launch of #BigThankYou – the UK’s biggest celebration of sports volunteers.

On the weekend of 17-18 December 2016, sports and recreation clubs from around the UK will be sending, shouting, tweeting and posting their photos and thanks to the amazing volunteers that make sport happen in all of our communities. We need you to be part of it – so save the date!

On Sunday 18 December, the celebration will culminate on the red carpet at BBC Sports Personality of the Year in Birmingham – when celebrities and athletes will surprise a host of nominated volunteers with a call to say a #BigThankYou.

Last year’s star callers included tennis world number one Andy Murray, British golfer Rory McIlroy, international rugby hero Dan Carter, Paralympic tennis star Jordanne Wiley and Olympic gold medallists, Max Whitlock, Dina Asher-Smith and Greg Rutherford.

Nominate a volunteer for a #BigThankYou call

Join In and BBC Get Inspired are back on the BBC Sports Personality of the Year red carpet for the #BigThankYou to sports volunteers.

If you know someone who keeps your clubs ticking over by lending a hand, nominate them below – and be in with a chance of receiving a phone call from a sports star at the 2016 BBC Sports Personality of the Year in Birmingham.

By completing this form you agree to the #BigThankYou Terms and Conditions.

Hello from Sport and Recreation Alliance

Welcome to Sport and Recreation Alliance. As we take hold of the reins, we want to highlight our plans for Join In and share what volunteering means to us.

Volunteering is at the heart of sport and recreation in this country. Just last weekend I saw this first hand, very clearly in athletics.

On Saturday morning I, like 100s of 1000s of others, took part in my local parkrun, set up and managed by friendly enthusiastic volunteers always ready with a clap and a cheer on the 5km route. Later on Saturday I had the privilege of attending the England Athletics Annual Awards and Hall of Fame evening. Whilst the room was full of many very well known athletes, past and present, it was the stories of the volunteers that stood out the most. People who had dedicated their lives – in one case more than 60 years – to their sport. (more…)

Join In is changing

Four years ago, it was time to start making history. Now we’re ready for the next adventure.

Join In began life in a golden summer of sport. Following the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, we had a simple but incredibly ambitious goal: to create a volunteering legacy for the nation.

This was something that no previous Host City had ever achieved.

Honestly, we had no idea where this would take us. There was no guide. No blueprint. But inspired by the irrepressible energy of the London 2012 Games Makers, we had a good feeling.

And we realised something very important.

Following the London 2012 gold rush, our country was more in love with sport than ever. But it wasn’t just about medals and glory. (more…)
