What is I AM TEAM GB?

I AM TEAM GB↑ is inviting the Great British public to get out and get active on Saturday 27 August. We’re looking for thousands of clubs to open their doors to new participants and inspire the UK to take part in sport. Olympians, fresh from Rio 2016 Olympic Games, will be attending events across the nation, giving the public the opportunity to stand shoulder to shoulder with Team GB.

‘Making Time’ research launched in Whitehall

On 5th May 2016, Join In launched its look into the motivations and barriers of volunteers in the UK, with a focus on sport.

The launch in Whitehall was led by Join In Chair, Lord Charles Allen, and Britain’s most successful Paralympian and Join In trustee, Tanni Grey-Thompson. Join In patron Eddie Izzard, leading economist and former Cabinet Secretary Lord Gus O’Donnell and Minister for Civil Society Rob Wilson also backed the launch.

Lord Charles Allen recounted his deep commitment to sports volunteering, from the Manchester Commonwealth Games to being Mayor of the Olympic Village in London 2012.

British Paralympic campaign receives stellar support

Eddie Izzard and Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson are two of four ambassadors supporting the latest fundraising campaign launched by the British Paralympic Association↑. Members of the public are asked to help Supercharge Paralympics GB by generating support and donating funds.

Repeating the success of London 2012 won’t be easy, especially with the next two Olympic and Paralympic Games far away from home soil. It will be more challenging and expensive, and while the Paralympians get funding from the National Lottery and UK Sport, theses athletes often require extras, such as special mattresses.

Eddie Izzard to lead the #BigThankYou to grassroots sport

We’re back at BBC Sports Personality of the Year!

Join In and BBC Get Inspired are joining forces again to lead the UK’s biggest thank you to sports volunteers at BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2015.

Taking place in Belfast on Sunday 20 December, Join In patron Eddie Izzard will be asking the sporting greats attending the star-studded event and the viewers at home to say a #BigThankYou to the UK’s unsung heroes of sport.

Eddie said: “It’s incredible how many people are investing their time into helping others stay fit and active. Whether it’s friends motivating each other to go out running, an enthusiastic parent collecting subs or the coach taking training each week, there is a whole army of helpers out there, building their communities by making sport happen. We want to celebrate their incredible achievements and everything they do for British sport.”

Live on the red carpet, Eddie will be manning our gold phone box and inviting the stars to phone and surprise outstanding sports volunteers, saying a #BigThankYou for all their hard work. (more…)

parkrun supports the #BigHelpOut

parkrun is working with Join In to support the Big Help Out, our nationwide campaign to inspire 10,000 new volunteers into community sport.

parkrun↑ delivers weekly 5k timed runs (and 2k for juniors) that are at the heart of local communities. Volunteers are the lifeblood of parkrun, with around 6,000 weekly helpers bringing the community together to create a unique atmosphere that families, friends and neighbours can enjoy.

Whether it’s cheering on the runners, marshalling or even baking post-run cakes – there’s a role for everyone at parkrun.

Event Director at Woodley parkrun in Berkshire, Kerri French, said, “Being a volunteer at parkrun has helped me in so many ways. It has boosted my confidence, especially in public speaking, which has had a knock-on effect on my day job.

For me, parkrun has always been about other people’s running and not my own, and I get a lot of enjoyment from just watching people turn up and enjoy their run with friends.” (more…)

Big Help Out Hockey aims to garner support for hockey clubs across the UK

It’s Big Help Out Hockey

With the EuroHockey Championships in full swing, we’ve teamed up with England Hockey to promote the sport at grassroots level. Get ready for ‘Big Help Out Hockey’.

The ‘Big Help Out Hockey’ initiative will work with amateur hockey clubs across the UK to inspire new and existing volunteers to help out each week at their local clubs and contribute to the #BigHelpOut target of 10,000 ahead of Sports Personality of the Year.

To do this, we’ll promote a number of community hockey clubs and groups – shining a light on volunteers and the huge impact they have in the sport.

We’ve got 1,859 volunteer opportunities at hockey clubs and events that need filling, and there are roles for everyone: club coaches, umpires and event organisers. And they don’t just need help pitch-side; you can help with social media, paint the clubhouse or collect members’ subs – the options are endless.

Throughout the campaign, community clubs with a Join In club page will benefit from a huge audience of volunteers, who will be driven towards hockey. Our network of on-the-ground volunteers will be on hand to work with clubs regionally and help connect and support clubs and volunteers. (more…)
