Even thriving clubs need more help. North Shields Polytechnic shares a few tips on overcoming growing pains. 

We are born on waiting lists. Before we walk or talk, we queue for the best schools and season tickets. But that’s just what happens when lots of people want the same thing.

In Britain’s Northeast, North Shields Polytechnic is one of the coveted. The Tyne and Wear athletics club is one of the region’s largest athletics clubs with a thriving membership of more than 600 people.


Run It with Join In

Join us for our ‘Run It’ campaign and grow community running groups across the UK.

This summer, we’re going to get more volunteers involved in community sport and boost participation in running with our new ‘Run It’ campaign.

Running is the fastest-growing participation sport in the UK and volunteers are the backbone. From informal running groups, athletics teams and marathons, running depends on thousands of people helping out.

We have more than 4,000 volunteer opportunities at running clubs and events that need filling, and there are roles for everyone: from run group leaders and club coaches, through to event marshals and supporters at your local fun run.

Our Official Partner Intersport are offering you the chance to volunteer at Electric Run London ↑.

Electric Run is the premier night-time 5k run/walk experience, where the participants are an integrated part of the show. The course features immersive “lands” of light and sound that transport the participant into an electric wonderland. Participants are encouraged to join in by lighting up with glow sticks, LEDs and anything else their imagination can conjure.=


The event opens to the public at 19:00 and thousands of participants will take part in the World’s brightest 5km around London’s most iconic stadium – Wembley. (more…)

Become a cycling volunteer with Breeze

Become a British Cycling Breeze Champion

Follow in the tyre tracks of Laura Trott, Joanna Rowsell and Dame Sarah Storey by inspiring women to get cycling – apply to become a British Cycling Breeze champion.

The Breeze network, a British Cycling initiative funded by Sport England, aims to get more women cycling by offering fun, friendly and social bike rides – led by women, for women.

There are already 1,000 Breeze champions leading rides on a daily basis. And with interest in cycling booming since Team GB’s gold-medal successes at London 2012, many more are needed.


Be a London Winter Run volunteer for Cancer Research UK

Be part of the warm welcome for thousands of runners as they brave the February cold for charity – volunteer for Cancer Research UK’s London Winter Run.

Four hundred pairs of helping hands are needed to support those taking part in the fundraising 10K run on Sunday 1 February, 2015.

About 15,000 runners will be out on the streets conquering the cold – among them Jo Pavey, reigning Commonwealth and European 10,000m champion and Join In supporter.

Organisers are looking for happy, friendly faces to meet and greet entrants at the start, help them with their bags and belongings, and motivate them for their chilly feat.

Volunteers stationed at the finish will cheer the runners over the line, present them with their victory medals and make sure they get their cosy thank-you from the Cancer Research UK Polar Bear Hug Squad. (more…)

Volunteer at the Olympic Park for Euro Hockey 2015

Experience the fun and excitement of volunteering at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park – become a Hockey Maker for the 2015 Euro Hockey Championships, 21 to 30 August.

Three years on from London 2012’s hugely popular tournament, the clash of hockey sticks will return to the colourful pitches of Stratford as the top eight men’s and women’s teams from across Europe compete in 40 matches over 10 days.

England Hockey need 400 enthusiastic Hockey Makers in 40 different roles. Could you help stage this major tournament?

Be a Games Starter for Nottingham 2015 CP World Games

Athletes from around the world will travel to Nottingham in August 2015 for the Cerebral Palsy International Sports and Recreation Association (CPISRA) World Games – and you could be among the volunteers helping them.

The 11 days of games from 6 August to 16 August give sportsmen and women with cerebral palsy the chance to compete against each other on an international stage.

CPISRA has launched the Games Starter programme to recruit volunteers to support competitions and athletes themselves, with roles ranging from media liaison to results runner, and event organisation to ceremony support.

To make the opportunity even more special, Games Starters will be able to stay in a dedicated Volunteer Village, hosted on the Clifton Site of Nottingham Trent University, for a cost of only £15 per person per night. (more…)
