Through her volunteering, Lucy Tickle helps make her local parkrun happen.

parkrun’s junior volunteer – one year on

In 2014 we spoke to Lucy Tickle, one of parkrun’s youngest volunteers. We caught up with Lucy again to see how her volunteering and running are going.

Do you still help out at your local parkrun?

Yes, when I have a running event at a weekend, it’s the perfect time to volunteer at parkrun.

Have you tried out any new volunteering roles? Were they fun?

I have tried token sorting, which involves sorting them into order ready for the following week. This role is fun as we do this in the café and get a hot chocolate with marshmallows! (more…)

Team GB athletes and volunteers inspire the next generation of gymnasts.

Springboard to success

For Kieran Bird, volunteering has led to paid job in the sport he loves. He tells us about his time at Milton Keynes Springers Gymnastics Club.

Why did you choose to help out in gymnastics?

I’ve been around sports all my life, either playing or watching them on TV, and gymnastics was always something I had an interest in. I mean, some of things gymnasts can do are incredible – truly a piece of art as I like to think in the back of my mind.

What made you decide to volunteer?

After finishing college, I was looking for work but it was hard to come by especially in sport. So I decided to go the old fashioned route and volunteer (via the Join In website). That way, I could get experience and improve my coaching.

How Join In Local Leaders help sport clubs

Who are our Local Leaders? They are the 250 faces of Join In in your local community, committed to putting more volunteers into sports clubs and groups like yours.

There are lots of ways they can help you to recruit and retain the helpers you need. Here are some of them.

Using the Join In website

Our Local Leaders can help you to create a profile on the website to promote your volunteering opportunities.

Once created, the profile will be visible to volunteers looking for opportunities in your local area and will allow the volunteers to contact you directly.

Join In Local Leaders can help with events at your sports club.

Helping with events

If you are organising an event and are looking for a large number of volunteers, Join In Local Leaders can help with that too!

They can guide you through updating your club profile with the event detail, and help you promote it through social media so it reaches a bigger audience.

Many of our Local Leaders are experienced volunteers themselves, often with a large network of people they might be able to on to volunteer at your events.
