A Day in the Life of a Race Maker! - Silverstone Classic 2017 by Paul Beard
Up at 6 am, tea, banana cake and muffins for breakfast and here we go!
After the madness and craziness of the 350,000's F1 in mid-July, a calmness surrounds the Race Makers at the Route Masters Bus Stop at 7.45 on a sunny morning at end of July..... Don’t speak too soon!
Within 30 mins we have reworked the queuing system on both the arrivals & departures bus stops, sorted out some new exits, agreed on some new processes with security & bribed Stewart with sweets looking after the VIP drivers to help out our really needy customers. Suz Hodgkinson is on arrivals & yours truly is on departures bus stop from The Village to The Wing. The Route Master Buses are running well and the only decisions that customers have to make are "do you want to sit inside or upstairs... please decide before you step on the bus!!!”. Simple you would say.... mmmm.
Currently, about 50% of our lovely customers are ignoring our requests and proceed to have a conversation as they get on the bus....blocking both entry points - you can see smiles fading in the queue behind ... but we love them!
Andy Beeken has now joined the departures team.... and our mantra for the day.... remains.... we will make you smile come rain or shine!
A quick Blast of YMCA with our "pointy foam hands" is definitely bringing a smile to a few faces! Been looking after the buses for 6 hours today so far both Andy & I have been caught helping on the buses & then the enthusiastic bus driver starts the engine and we're moving! Yes, 5 mins later we arrive at The Wing!!!... Shall we say a few smiles were exchanged on our return!
Yes, it is already 2 pm and Barry, Paul S, Sue W & Lizzie are taking over for a bit.... break! Being a Race Maker is so infectious we actually don't want to go! Standing on your feet helping customers, sorting out special VIP for those really struggling is so rewarding!
We eventually were "stood down" 7ish & so a quick walk in the rain to grab a beer ... well, a pint of a "Rhubarb & Custard" cider and Fish & Chips!
Not a bad way to end the day.... with some of the best people around who want to help & have some fun - Perfect!
Time to get some sleep.... the final push tomorrow ... set the alarms ... night all.
