Join In The Big Thank You 2016
Sports volunteers in the spotlight at BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2016!
We are thrilled to announce the launch of #BigThankYou – the UK’s biggest celebration of sports volunteers.
On the weekend of 17-18 December 2016, sports and recreation clubs from around the UK will be sending, shouting, tweeting and posting their photos and thanks to the amazing volunteers that make sport happen in all of our communities. We need you to be part of it – so save the date!
On Sunday 18 December, the celebration will culminate on the red carpet at BBC Sports Personality of the Year in Birmingham – when celebrities and athletes will surprise a host of nominated volunteers with a call to say a #BigThankYou.
Last year’s star callers included tennis world number one Andy Murray, British golfer Rory McIlroy, international rugby hero Dan Carter, Paralympic tennis star Jordanne Wiley and Olympic gold medallists, Max Whitlock, Dina Asher-Smith and Greg Rutherford.
Last year’s star callers included BBC Sports Personality of the Year Andy Murray, along with Greg Rutherford, footballer Lucy Bronze, Rory McIlroy, Denis Lewis, Paula Radcliffe and many more.
After another amazing year of sport, we’re expecting even more big names to jump at the chance to thank volunteers. Former England rugby union player and current sports broadcaster Maggie Alphonsi will be among them:
“My first coach was a volunteer and contributed to my success, helping me to develop my skills,” she says. “That made a big difference in allowing me to have the goal to play for England.
“I got into rugby at 14 and the people who kept my club going were all parents and coaches who volunteered – that was really special. When I look back I think, ‘wow’, if it wasn’t for them I probably wouldn’t have got into sport and other people wouldn’t have got into sport either.”
The #BigThankYou campaign is led by Join In (part of the Sport and Recreation Alliance), together with BBC Get Inspired, Sport England and UK Sport.
The Sport and Recreation Alliance, working with partners, has recently been handed the baton from the Join In Trust to continue building on the legacy of sport volunteering. The partnership believes that volunteers are the heartbeat of sport and physical activity across the UK. So whether it’s a coach that helps build a player’s confidence, an enthusiastic marshal who motivates someone to push a bit harder or the club secretary keeping the books balanced, please join the nation’s celebration of volunteers on 18 December and say a #BigThankYou.
How you can get involved
1. Save the date and tune in!
BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2016 is on the evening of Sunday 18 December, BBC One. Viewers will also be able to watch the stars on the red carpet preview show on the Red Button, earlier in the afternoon.
2. Get your club involved
If you’re a member of a local sports or physical activity club or group, then you’ll know how valuable volunteers are. #BigThankYou is your chance to celebrate them and help keep them motivated. You can use the toolkit we’ve developed to make the most of the campaign.
* Ten randomly selected volunteers will be added to the Big Thank You call list on the night, but due to circumstances beyond our control, Join In and BBC Get Inspired cannot guarantee anyone receiving a phone call. Terms and conditions apply.
