Mary heads over to join our Legacy Volunteers
Mary O’Leary – Games Maker, face of Making Time and now Rio bound – spreads the good word about volunteering.
“After all the preparations and planning, my day of leaving for Rio arrived on 27July. Mixed feelings of excitement, pride at getting to this day and exhaustion from packing.
I planned to wear my Join In Legacy Volunteer T-shirt on the flight and change once on the flight, but found the interest the tshirt generated a great help at discussing volunteering and spreading the word.
I had conversations with Team GB hockey team, sailing coaches, shooting coach, New Zealand rowing team, fellow volunteers, Brazilian and Portugese family and cabin staff. The poor air steward who asked “what’s all this volunteering about” received a slightly longer response than he expected!

It’s amazing how volunteering can help generate discussions and form friendships.
I missed travelling with the two remaining ‘Rio Trio’ – Ann and Aileen – but felt I was part of a larger team travelling together, all waiting for our adventure to start.
The Rio family who sat next to me gave me their card in case I needed help or extra support while there. This was the first of many helpful gestures I encountered on the trip. Everyone has been welcoming, immigration smiling and chatty.
Seeing Team GB wearing their gear was lovely, especially after our kitting out days. This was in contrast to the Rowing team from New Zealand who wore mixed T-shirt and shorts!
Seeing Team GB waiting together chatting and Usain Bolt was like putting the cherry on top of an already wonderful cake.
Good luck everyone – we have an amazing few weeks ahead of us. Who knows what is going to happen? But we have a great opportunity to showcase volunteering again, as well as having the best adventure ever.”
