Eddie Izzard to lead the #BigThankYou to grassroots sport

We’re back at BBC Sports Personality of the Year!

Join In and BBC Get Inspired are joining forces again to lead the UK’s biggest thank you to sports volunteers at BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2015.

Taking place in Belfast on Sunday 20 December, Join In patron Eddie Izzard will be asking the sporting greats attending the star-studded event and the viewers at home to say a #BigThankYou to the UK’s unsung heroes of sport.

Eddie said: “It’s incredible how many people are investing their time into helping others stay fit and active. Whether it’s friends motivating each other to go out running, an enthusiastic parent collecting subs or the coach taking training each week, there is a whole army of helpers out there, building their communities by making sport happen. We want to celebrate their incredible achievements and everything they do for British sport.”

Live on the red carpet, Eddie will be manning our gold phone box and inviting the stars to phone and surprise outstanding sports volunteers, saying a #BigThankYou for all their hard work. (more…)

Behind the scenes at BBC Sports Personality

This year BBC Sports Personality of the Year invited 500 volunteers from the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles to attend the awards. Join In volunteer Lisa Blythman-Wood was one of the lucky Clyde-siders invited to the star-studded event in Glasgow’s SSE Hydro.

I have watched the BBC Sports Personality of Year for years, voting for my favourite sportsmen and women, cheering on my fellow Games Makers in 2012. But, this year was going to be so very different.

For once I didn’t have to spend hours deciding what to wear, it was simply going to be my distinct Games-time red and grey uniform with a little added sparkle. Putting it on always made me feel proud and honoured. It gives everyone the license to say hello, ask me to be an impromptu photographer and for strangers to talk to me on the train.

I boarded my flight to Glasgow on Sunday and quickly realised the plane was packed with sporting elite. Sitting next to Gary Street (head coach of the England Women’s rugby team), in the same row as Paul Vice (awarded the Military Cross and medalist at the Invictus Games), Jonny Wilkinson behind me and the Women’s Rugby World Cup winners (about to be Team of Year) in front of me, I knew that the evening’s celebration was going to magical. BBC Get Inspired Unsung Hero: behind the scenes at regional judging

Join In Volunteer Kirsten Shelton was chosen to sit on the judging panel for the BBC Get Inspired Unsung Hero Award for the West Midlands in 2014. The winner and 14 others from BBC regions go forward to the national award, to be announced at BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

On the first day of my half-term holiday I could be found, bright eyed and bushy tailed, standing outside the BBC Birmingham, nervously clutching a pack of papers.

I had received the nomination forms for the BBC Get Inspired Unsung Hero and Community Sports award three days before the judging panel met, and spent some hours (in between volunteering at the LOROS Leicester marathon) reading through the five awards we were judging – there were post-it notes all over my lounge!

On the panel with me was another judging newbie, Barry Ewington – the winner of the BBC West Midlands Unsung Hero award in 2013. He joined the Nuneaton Harriers when he was just 15, and now, 60 years later, he is a coach and the Harriers’ president.
