Le Tour de Forfar

Want to start your own cycling group? Then read how Kirsty Cameron did it and get on your bike!

When most people think of cyclists, they think of lung-busting climbs during the Tour de France or rakish enthusiasts whizzing along the UK’s motorways every Sunday.

However, as Join In Volunteer Kirsty Cameron proved, cycling is for everyone. A couple of years ago, she set up a women’s cycling group in Forfar, Scotland. Here’s how she did it:

2014: A year in review

How does a UK sports volunteering charity hit the headlines? In 2014, the answer for Join In was a string of high profile collaborations. Read about our amazing 2014 in the Join In Journal, below.

Jo Pavey: “I wouldn’t be a runner without volunteers.”

Running wonder woman Jo Pavey – the oldest female European Champion in history –  said that she wouldn’t have even had a career without the help of volunteers at local clubs.

The mother of two won gold in Zürich in 2014, just 10 days after winning Commonwealth bronze at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, and only 11 months after having her second child.

She told Kate Garraway on ITV’s Lorraine show: “If people hadn’t volunteered, I would have never even done my running. I’ll always be grateful to people like that.

Jo’s amazing performance has encouraged scores of new people, particularly mothers, to take up running or get more involved in local sport.

“People have been really kind and saying that doing it at the age of 40, it’s inspired them to get out,” she said. “If I can inspire people to enjoy sport, I’ve been very fortunate.

Tour de ITV: The Movie

On 1 July, Join In volunteers supported a dozen celebrities as they cycled the Tour de ITV from The Rovers Return on Coronation Street, over the Pennines, and up to the Woolpack in Emmerdale.

The intrepid cyclists were Emmerdale stars Gaynor Faye, Nicola Wheeler, Jamie Shelton and James Hooton, Coronation Street’s Colson Smith, Good Morning Britain presenter Laura Tobin, 911 singer Jimmy Constable, and TV presenters Matt Littler and Darren Jeffries. Helping them on their way was celebrity volunteer Lee Brennan, Jimmy’s 911 bandmate.

The event was part of the ITV Local Heroes campaign, which aims to encourage people to  volunteer with sports clubs and groups in their local areas. We caught the fun on film.

ITV Fever Pitch – the numbers that added up to fun

As Brazil played host to the World Cup in June and July, Manchester became home to ITV Fever Pitch – a free beach soccer arena.

The staff of Join In volunteers welcomed local clubs, children and community groups to play matches, and crowds of football fans to watch World Cup games on the big screen.

We totted up the numbers behind the event’s success.

The ITV Fever Pitch fan park in Manchester was supported by Join In and our army of volunteers. Stats from the World Cup beach soccer event reveal how events like this rely on the generous support of volunteers.
