From the stars on the BBC Sports Personality red carpet to the clubs across the UK, #BigThankYou rang out!

Another year, another brilliant #BigThankYou!

Andy Murray wasn’t the only winner on Sunday night. As the nation voted for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year, thousands of you also helped create the UK’s biggest celebration of sports volunteers.

We are a little stunned to say that – thanks to you – #BigThankYou trended on Twitter for the third year in a row.

From Team GB stars calling up volunteers from the red carpet, to local sports and recreation clubs giving their thanks on social media, it was an incredible evening.

Below you can see our highlights and films from another special evening, all in support of volunteers. (more…)

Volunteering at the Rio Paralympics

Join In Legacy Volunteer Chris Thorn loved lending a hand at the Olympics in Rio – now he’s helping out at the Paralympics.

“It’s the Paralympics Opening Ceremony tonight and after two full days of intensive training by Omega’s Josh and Hannah (the best Floridian double act since Mickey and Minnie), I can’t wait to start on Friday – as a Caller in the statistics and technology team at the wheelchair tennis.

If we are scheduled to work in the two big show courts, there will be three of us up in the rafters in a little box – one on radar, one caller, one stats input. It will be our job to activate the service speed gun and to mark the direction of the serve that you see on TV graphics (wide, body or centre) for commentators, coaches, athletes and fans to analyse the game.

London to Rio and back – the legacy volunteers return

Most of our Join In Legacy Volunteers have now returned from Rio, tired but elated at their experiences from the first Olympic Games to be held in South America. Here they each choose their personal highlights of what it was like to volunteer at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Steve Morris

“There were so many memorable moments and experiences that I struggle to choose a favourite: the hours before shifts spent strolling around the Olympic Park at Barra; stopping to take photos for people and just chatting to them; finding out where they were from and enjoying hearing all about their excitement as part of the world’s number one event; working in the VCM with the press, seeing them telling the rest of the world through photos and creative reporting, sharing this amazing spectacle with those who relied on these guys’ professionalism to make it as real as they could, for the whole world to enjoy. And of course being able to watch so much live sport and on the TVs too. Bring on Tokyo!!”

It all kicked off with ITV switching off all seven of it’s channels for an hour, asking the nation to get out and get active. Star of Rio 2016 Max Whitlock did the honours…

Day 3

After Felipe’s transfer last night, today I started working in the Welcome Centre, just a couple of big tents along from the workforce check in area. It’s a big hub of baggage trolleys, accommodation check-in help desks, lots of people scuttling around to get the correct authorisation and using the right entrance or exit doors and some bean bags for a comfortable respite.

Behind the scenes at the Team GB Rio 2016 kitting out – Part 1

You’ve probably seen the new Stella McCartney-designed Team GB kit, recently unveiled for Rio 2016. But ever wondered how they get their athletic hands on it? Andrew Hartopp went behind the scenes as a kitting out volunteer…

Part 1  |  Part 2

“The process started back on 2 June when over 70,000 items of kit were delivered by lorries into hall 3A of the NEC in Birmingham. These items will kit out over 1,200 members of Team GB, from athletes to coaches and back-up staff.

Day one as a volunteer

I didn’t know what to expect but I wasn’t disappointed. The training the day before set the scene, and it was clear how important the kitting out was by the amount of planning that had taken place. (more…)
