Team GB athletes and volunteers inspire the next generation of gymnasts.

Springboard to success

For Kieran Bird, volunteering has led to paid job in the sport he loves. He tells us about his time at Milton Keynes Springers Gymnastics Club.

Why did you choose to help out in gymnastics?

I’ve been around sports all my life, either playing or watching them on TV, and gymnastics was always something I had an interest in. I mean, some of things gymnasts can do are incredible – truly a piece of art as I like to think in the back of my mind.

What made you decide to volunteer?

After finishing college, I was looking for work but it was hard to come by especially in sport. So I decided to go the old fashioned route and volunteer (via the Join In website). That way, I could get experience and improve my coaching.

Why use Join In for your sports club?

Do you rely on volunteers at your sports club? Could you use a few extra pairs of hands?

Right now, 7 out of 10 sports clubs need more volunteers. As an official Games legacy charity, and the new home of the London 2012 Games Makers, we want to change that. Our aim is to help you find more supporters and helpers in your neighbourhood, whenever you need them.

Thousands of local sports clubs and groups have already added their page on Join In. Here are just a few reasons why:

Hidden diamonds: Uncovering the true value of sport volunteers

Join In has released ground-breaking research into the hidden value of sport volunteers, going beyond cost to measure the true value they create – through participation, wellbeing, trust and community.

Going beyond traditional valuation methods which use the cost-replacement model, we investigated the true value of sports volunteering to personal wellbeing and happiness of the volunteers themselves, plus the wider benefit to their communities.

Below is our revealing report into this hidden value.

Add volunteer skills to your Join In club page

Is your club looking for helpers with specific knowledge or experience? Now you can add these volunteer skills to your Join In club page and find the perfect volunteer match.

There are loads of volunteers out there with a lot to give. Among them are those with experience doing exactly the things your club needs, such as bookkeeping, coaching, photography or – like the Man of (Stainless) Steel in our video – catering…

Volunteers will be able to search opportunities by the skills they offer, as well as location and sport. Once you’ve added skills to your club page, it will show in results that match their searches.

How Join In Local Leaders help sport clubs

Who are our Local Leaders? They are the 250 faces of Join In in your local community, committed to putting more volunteers into sports clubs and groups like yours.

There are lots of ways they can help you to recruit and retain the helpers you need. Here are some of them.

Using the Join In website

Our Local Leaders can help you to create a profile on the website to promote your volunteering opportunities.

Once created, the profile will be visible to volunteers looking for opportunities in your local area and will allow the volunteers to contact you directly.

Helping with events

If you are organising an event and are looking for a large number of volunteers, Join In Local Leaders can help with that too!

They can guide you through updating your club profile with the event detail, and help you promote it through social media so it reaches a bigger audience.

Many of our Local Leaders are experienced volunteers themselves, often with a large network of people they might be able to on to volunteer at your events.
